Meditation for the Inner Critic

In today’s meditation we meet up with our inner critic, hear what it has to say, and learn how to move on from that place of judgement into a place of love and acceptance.

Welcome, I invite you to close your eyes and start to settle in..

Starting off by taking the deepest breath you’ve taken yet today…inhaling deeply….and then exhaling…

Nowhere to go….nothing to do….just being here in this very moment….

Starting to feel the relaxation flowing through your body….

Softening your brow…..feeling your eyes getting heavy…..letting your jaw go slack….

Feeling the relaxation flowing down through your neck, softening your neck muscles….and down into your shoulders….

Perhaps letting your shoulders drop down and back…releasing any tension you may be holding in this area.

And now bringing your attention down into your chest…perhaps dropping your shoulders down and back a bit and opening your chest area ever so slightly…feeling the space and openness of your chest….

Softening your belly…..letting it go….

Feeling the relaxation flow down through your back….down into your legs…..and out your feet….

And now that you are in this very relaxed space….I invite you to bring to mind a time that you may have felt judgement toward yourself…a time that your inner critic started to run the show….just being for a moment to see if anything wants to arise for you to look at….

If nothing comes up for you, you can simply tune into your breath and focus on the music…..

If something does arise for you, I’d invite you to take a breath and just notice what feelings you have in your body…

Where in your body do you feel the judgement? Is it tight? Constricted? Light or heavy?

What are the words that you hear?

Now that you have the image in mind….I invite you to imagine yourself at a table in a room with a door….the door opens and this judging part of you enters the room….

If it feels comfortable to you, you can greet this part of yourself…you may even say something like “hello judgement” and invite them to pull up a chair and have a seat beside you….

And now….invite this part of you to share with you what they are feeling….what is going on for them….what is it that they need you to hear…

Take your time with this and see what comes up……

And then…when judgement has had its space to share…I invite you to thank them for being so open and honest with you…. Acknowledge that they are a part of you, but that they don’t get to run the show…when you give space for your feelings to be heard and felt it takes the power away and you can then step back into your true self…

I find that when we argue against and try to push away what we’re feeling we are resisting and when we resist there is pain and suffering…when you slow down and hear what wants to be heard and felt, you are allowing and giving space and with that comes peace…

Taking a moment now and being with your breath….breathing in….and breathing out….

Breathing in….and breathing out….noticing how your body feels now….

And when you are ready….bringing your attention back to the sound of my voice…..and to the room that you’re in…feeling the surface beneath you….

Perhaps wiggling fingers and toes…..shrugging your shoulders and stretching in any way that feels good to you….

And ever so slowly opening and closing your eyes….

Thank you so much for spending your time with me today…..and as always, remember, that true peace is just one breath away.
