A meditation for spiritual beings having a human experience
This past weekend I was at a mini retreat with my mentor/guide. I was so looking forward to our time together as a time to be with each other, to work on whatever was present for me and to see what amazing spiritual revelations I would receive.
And it was that, except for the fact that the lightning bolt of a spiritual revelation that I thought I would magically receive did not appear in the way I had imagined.
Instead, what happened was that I was able to see the resistance I had to “what is”. I had the opportunity to let go of the way I wanted things to unfold and really relax and surrender into what was unfolding. You see, my humanness was resisting and once I let go of that, I was fully able to experience the immense gifts of our time together and it was indeed magical in all ways possible. Bigger and better than I could have scripted it to be.
In today’s meditation I offer you a story that follows up on last week’s musings about how we are indeed spiritual beings having a human experience.

I invite you to close your eyes and settle in, relaxing into your body, feeling it get heavier and feeling more settled in your seat. Taking a deep breath in and letting it go. Letting go of the day, nowhere to go, nothing to do. Just feeling grateful for this sacred space. And now taking a moment and just softening your belly, letting it go. And now bringing your attention up to your head and softening your brow, letting it smooth out. Feeling your eyes getting heavy, letting your jaw go slack. Relaxing the muscles in your neck and your shoulders. Perhaps dropping your shoulders down and back and opening up the chest, feeling your arms getting heavy, bringing your attention to your torso now. Letting your chest and back muscles relax and feeling that relaxation flow down through your legs, to your feet, and all the way out of your toes. Feeling the relaxation flow through you, through every cell in your body, taking a moment and feeling the relaxation flowing through your body and enjoying this place of peace and wellbeing. And now in this perfectly relaxed space, I'd like to take you on a journey in time.
Imagine that you're going back to a time before you were born. You are now existing as your soul, your higher self, as your beingness without form. Taking a moment to appreciate this unique perspective, feeling the richness and fullness of who you are. Separate from this physical body you are in now, feeling the expansiveness of all that is and of all you are. And now I'd like you to imagine that you're sitting at a very large table surrounded by many beings who are there to support you. You may even find that you feel a familiarity with some of them, or perhaps not. There is no right or wrong.
The topic of discussion at this table is the fact that you wish to be born into physical form. And the purpose of the discussion is for you to map out this next lifetime. You discuss the lessons you'd like to learn in this next human experience. And then you start picking the players who will support you in having these experiences. You decide who your parents will be, your friends, your teachers, both in the sense of school and in the sense of life teachers. You pick your bosses, your mate, if you choose to have one or many, whether or not you'll have children. And if so, how that will play out.
And you'll continue on picking every player you will interact with on this next life journey. And as you plan this out, you're filled with intense excitement and enthusiasm because from this place, you know that you are totally supported in every step of your journey. You are not worried because you know that you are indeed an infinite being who will be having a human experience. From this place you know that you are not separate from the infinite, whether you call this God, Source, the Universe, or your Higher Self. And from this place you know that you are all of the above. There's a Rumi quote that says: “You are not just a drop in the ocean. You are the entire ocean in a drop”. And this takes on a deeper meaning for you as you realize that you will indeed be the infinite, having a human experience. From this vantage point you know that you are a powerful being and that you can be, do, or have whatever you want in this next lifetime. So you plan this journey with gusto and absolutely no fear.
And once you have finalized your plans, your experiences, your opportunities, your lessons, or whatever you choose to call them, you determine when you'll come into human form. And when this moment happens, you will be born into a physical body, helpless and dependent. And you may start to forget about your power and your connection. And from there you grow and experience all that you had planned. And there are times along the road that you think, what is going on? You hear people say that we create our own reality. And you think this can't be possible as you wouldn't have chosen some of your life experiences. So here you are in this moment. You're listening to this meditation, this story, and you have found your way to remembering who you truly are. Perhaps you've read the books, listen to the podcasts, found the people who speak to your soul. And you realize that there is more to this physical reality. And you've come to this place and you've found this meditation to explore this in more detail, to learn how to tap into your power, to take your power back, and to remember who you truly are, who you are as your true authentic self.
And with this remembering comes the gift of the glorious experience you came here for. It puts you back in the driver's seat as you remember that you are an infinite being in human form, that life hasn't happened to you by accident. And with this knowledge, you end up feeling peace. And when you forget, as you will from time to time, I invite you to remember your magnificence. You can do this simply by coming back to your breath to bring you back to this present moment, inhaling deeply, relaxing the body, and exhaling. And now, as we sit with this knowledge, I invite you to bring your attention back to the room that you're in. Hearing the sounds around you, feeling the surface beneath you, slowly wiggling your fingers and toes, perhaps stretching or shrugging your shoulders. Taking your time and slowly, and only when you're ready, opening and closing your eyes. Coming back to the hear and now.
