Meditation for Acceptance

In last week’s blog I discussed acceptance vs resistance and how when we resist what is, we suffer and the way to get out of this loop is to take a breath and to relax and accept what is and that from that place we can find peace and move forward.

This week I lead you through a meditation practice to guide you to a place of acceptance and peace. Enjoy!

Hello, I invite you to close your eyes and settle into your space…..

Starting off by taking the deepest breath you’ve taken yet today….inhaling deeply……and exhaling…..letting it all go…..

Taking a moment to settle into a normal pattern of breathing

Feeling the relaxation starting to flow through your body….

Nowhere to go, nothing to do, just being here in this present moment….

Hearing any sounds around you, feeling the surface beneath you and relaxing more and more….

Letting go of whatever has gone on in your day thus far….

Perhaps taking that mental elevator ride down from your head, down, down, down, into your heart….

Taking a moment now and bringing your attention to your brow, gently softening your brow, letting it smooth out….

Feeling your eyes getting heavier and your jaw getting slack….

Dropping your shoulders down and back, just settling in….

Softening the belly, letting it relax in this moment….

Perhaps noticing your neck and shoulders….are you holding any tension there? And if so, you can just invite that area to relax as well….

Breathing into that space and noticing how the muscles respond and relax….

Taking a moment now to notice your entire body…..

And just taking the next few moments to just breathe…..noticing each inhale and each exhale……nothing to do except to notice your breathing….

Knowing that it is normal for thoughts to float through, just notice them, let them float through and come back to your breath….

And now, in this relaxed state of being I’d like to invite you to ponder the following….

In life we tend to either be in acceptance of what is happening for us or in resistance…

I invite you to bring to mind something that you are experiencing or have experienced in your life where you may have been resisting….this can be something that is mildly irritating or something that you have a death grip on and don’t want to let go of….

Taking a few moments to ponder this situation or thought….noticing where the friction is….this can be a situation that you feel should be different, that someone or something should be acting in a different way or frustration that you don’t have what you want in your life….

With this in mind….notice how your body feels….do you notice any tension?

I would pose that when we argue against what is in this moment, we suffer….we feel tension, angst, dis-ease….

So now I’d like to invite you to practice softening this…Esther Hicks, who channels Abraham, gives the example of floating downstream….

Let’s envision for a moment that you are in the water and you are desperately trying to right yourself around, to control where you are and where you are trying to go….that you’re using your oars to keep the boat going where you want it to go..

And now….envision that you stop the struggle….that you let go of the oars, you relax and let the water take you along the path….the path of least resistance…..the flow that carries you along effortlessly…..

You can use this analogy in your day to day lives…when you have a situation in your lives that isn’t to your liking….what if, instead of railing against it….of saying it’s wrong and wishing it was different…what if you took your oars out of the water…what if you acknowledged that it is what it is in this very moment…..it just is….what if you stop the struggle and relax into it….take a deep breath….know that your struggle is keeping you stuck…..

And as you relax into it….imagine yourself going with the flow……knowing that if you want something different, you can have it, but in order for things to change, you need to let go….

And in the letting go….in the breathing and relaxation…you give yourself space and peace and in that space and peace….you are able to be with whatever wants to come to you next….see what ideas or impulses bubble up in you…..what is the next perfect step if there is one….and if one doesn’t bubble up….I invite you to be ok with that as well….there is nothing wrong….everything works out for us…by taking our oars out of the water, we allow solutions to present themselves and more importantly, we stop suffering…

Taking a moment now….and continuing to visualize yourself floating downstream…..letting go of control….remembering that you are taken care of at all times….you don’t have to always know the answers…..your inner guide will take care of you…..gently floating….relaxed and at peace….

And now I invite you to start to come back into your body…..hearing the sound of my voice…hearing any sounds around you…feeling the surface beneath you….slowly wiggling fingers and toes….shrugging your shoulders or stretching in any way that feels good to you….

And when you’re ready….ever so slowly….opening and closing your eyes.

Thank you so much for joining me today and remember that true peace is always just one breath away.
